The New Orleans Public Library is asking for any and all hardcover and paperback books for people of all ages in an effort to restock the shelves after Katrina. The staff will assess which titles will be designated for its collections. The rest will be distributed to destitute families or sold for library fundraising. Please send your books to:

Rica A. Trigs, Public Relations
New Orleans Public Library
219 Loyola Avenue

If you tell the post office that they are for the library in New Orleans, they will give you the library rate which is slightly less than the book rate.

UPDATE FROM C12 NEW ORLEANS :

Forwarded by request of the Convergence 12 New Orleans Committee
**********************************************************************************

Part of the goal of Convergence XII is to help some of the victims of Katrina. To that end, I'm proud to announce the creation of TWO programs, Adopt-A-Goth and Above Ground.

During Convergence XII, I'm proud to say that both Adopt-A-Goth and Above Ground will be on hand, in the Monteleone hotel, to distribute donations to pre-qualified individuals or any individual that can show an ID and provide some sort of proof that they lived in a disaster stricten area (New Orleans or the gulf coast).

If you want to donate or need to be included in the program, please contact donate (at) convergencexii (dot) com to contact both of these wonderfully, kind-hearted people that pulled this two charity drives together. All you need to do is email them and let them know you're out there... they'll email you back with further information.

Our darker inclined brothers and sisters, who lost everything, need your help replacing items that mean more than money. That pair of boots or that vinyl skirt that you don't wear anymore could go a long way to making someone feel that their life is somewhat normal again. Because as they say, nice boots are expensive. ;)

Please visit the Official Convergence 12 New Orleans site for more information.

".. The first problem facing our SAH Gulf State friends and colleagues is to find temporary long-term housing for the next three months or so. The second challenge is helping them continue their work by giving them library and web access and facilities in which to work. If you can encourage your university or institution to help in the effort, please do all you can. .."

Folks in the western burbs can take items to 924 N. Eagle Street in Naperville. This guy has set up a pavilion in his front yard to send both down south and to Illinois shelter sites. Eagle Street is located between Mill Street and Washington. This location is just north of Ogden Avenue. If you need help finding this location...email me off list with your location and I can give you directions.
Best Buy is matching cash donations at all Best Buy Stores.
Officers of Avalon...a non-profit set up by Pagan Author Kerr Cuchulain for his fellow law enforcement officers..has organized relief. Go to http://www.officersofavalon.com for more info.
If anyone is coming out to Temple of the Sacred Craft's West Suburban Pagan Dinners or coffee's, we will be taking donations of food and clothing for the relief effort.
Keep in mind with food that it is best to donate items that people can eat without cooking (canned raviolis or spaghetti, for instance, would be a good idea) is what is needed as many places do not have power. Water as well as baby food and formula is very much in need as well.

Correllian Nativist Church HQ
We are collecting and storing at 112 W. Main Street Hoopeston Il, Correllian Nativist Church HQ, is working with Avalon Cares, and we are offering our warehouse to store items that will be driven to the effected area. We are following the Officers of Avalon's lead here.
You can contact us at 217-283-4360 or Director@witchschool.com
They are looking for the follow items:

  • We need NON-REFRIGERATED goods, waterproof types of things. If it stores well and has decent shelf life, it is probably a valuable candidate to donate to local charities.
  • Examples of things always needed: Canned baby formula. Boxes of disposable baby diapers.
  • Canned foods. Most think of vegetables, but under stress people need protein too. Canned SPAM, meat, stews, small cooked and canned hams - items able to be eaten without further cooking when you're REALLY hungry are all good. Canned spaghettis are good, too.
  • Baby care items, like bottles and baby wipes, lotions, powder, rash items, boxes of baby cookies, car seats/carriers.
  • Blankets, sheets, pillows. If you're a crafter, making flat pillows in animal shapes is a marvel to upset displaced children and doubles as a toy/cuddly comfort.
  • When it comes to clothing, you need to know most of it ends up discarded. Nobody has volunteers enough to sort it. To make this useful, here are strict guidelines for you to comply with to help the most when donating clothing:
  • Only donate items in Good shape. Ripped, worn hard or missing buttons or zippers is useless when people need it now. We do not have volunteers to sew or repair.
  • Wash it first.
  • Sort and pack it up according to SEX and SIZE clearly. One sex/size to a bag, clearly marked is a dream come true to a volunteer receiving a mountain of clothes. Such an effort greatly helps and makes it more likely your donation will be given to someone in need rapidly. Volunteers will bless you for such forethought, believe me.
  • Nobody thinks of underwear. Ever. Donate NEW closed packages of any size of underwear. Socks, boxers, briefs, bikinis, socks, socks, socks, slippers. T-shirts. Stock up on sales any colors, but leave them sealed as new, all sizes. These become like gold coins to dirty, miserable, wet people left with nothing.
  • Shoes are useless in big efforts like this. It is best if we can simply pay for coupons for victims to go to a store and buy a pair that fits them. If you find a deal on a case of flip-flops new, this may be an exception.
  • PACKETS of dried drink flavors cheer up people and kids under such depressing times like few other things. Tang, etc. Plus many offer vitamins. Jars cannot so easily be handed out to many, but may be useful under tent city/feeding locations.
  • Emergen-C vitamins, which are flavored packets of vitamins readily dissolved into bottles of water are wonderful. But, the boxes must be sealed as bought at the store to be accepted.
  • Basic medical supplies, such as boxes of bandaids, sealed boxes of Tylenol, ointments, over the counter cold meds, including types for children. Ace bandages, gauze pads.
  • Toiletry items: sample size soaps, wet wipes, combs, brushes, tooth brushes, tooth paste (small travel sizes and sample sizes are good in emergency situations to hand out to many).
  • Liquid detergents for hand washing clothing are valuable. Clothespin/clothesline sets. Tarpaulins.

Being creative can make your efforts to help much more effective. Stocking up before the need and buying at sales or taking advantage of contacts in retail and communicating what can be used and donated is a way to help all year round.
Thank you,
Joie Balindjo
